The omnidirectional whip antenna of Sputnik 1, the Soviet Union's first man-made earth satellite, made signals available to ground monitoring and control stations and even radio amateurs. Although The United States and The Soviet Union were enemies of The Cold War, they were in close contact. Two young men at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), William Guier and George Weiffenbach, who made the antenna and amplifier, easily received the 20.005MHz signal sent by the satellite, and the laboratory colleagues were excited!
